Cell Phone Plans on a Cruise Ship: Comparing AT&T, Verizon, & T-Mobile

When you turn off airplane mode, does it give you a welcome text (like in Countries) for Cellular At Sea and give rates? I assume adding photos would charge some type of data rate in addition to text cost on ship, even with unlimited data plan at home. You definitely will incur charges on the ship if you use the cellular tower - always make sure your phone is on airplane mode while at sea. You’ve got unlimited texting and data at up to 2G speeds in 140+ countries and destinations—all at no extra cost.

Many ports offer free Wi-Fi to cruisers, but be aware these are open networks with limited security in place. Hi SRF -- we are traveling very soon on celebrity and i've been reading up on tmobile and cellular at sea. So, tmobile does not offer this -- so i think we are to use something like cellular at sea. If i read above what you said, we should pay for the ship wifi and then using wifi calling and phone in airplane mode we WON'T get charged for phone calls?

We can than text from our phones which is free since it goes through the Internet and not Cellular at Sea. On some cruises we can make VOIP phone calls using WiFi. WhatsApp is a decent option (for connecting with folks) over the Internet.
Cruise Ship Wifi & Internet Access
You won't pay extra for using any app that does not require data or is not connected to the internet. You also can use your phone as an alarm clock, but you'll have to manually set the time if the time onboard changes. Alternatively, turn off your cellular data and use your phone's Wi-Fi capability to send and receive text messages (such as iMessages on an iPhone). You can also use messaging apps like WhatsApp, which will also function over your ship's Wi-Fi network. Since you're probably already paying for Wi-Fi, this can be a more economical option than buying Wi-Fi and paying for roaming charges on your phone. The Norwegian app is available fleetwide as of July, 2019, and it’s free to download.

If you really need to make a phone call during your cruise, your best wallet-conscious bet is to wait until you're in port and use Wi-Fi calling or buy a phone card. You can also check with your phone carrier to see if there is an international calling plan you can purchase for the duration of your trip for use in port. An international calling plan will often significantly lower the per-minute cost of any phone calls you make while traveling (but won't cover calling or use on sea days). Roaming fees for anything on cruise ships are insane to put it mildly.
T-Mobile Cruise Ship Packages
It is very common to find restaurants offering free wifi, but you can also sometimes find free or cheap wifi at the beach. And, more surprisingly, on several recent cruises we have also found that there are excursion operators who offer free wifi on tour buses. Why would you want or need internet access while on your cruise vacation?
That was what I saw too, nice to have a connection though I think I'll stick to data/text as calls are expensive. Used to have TMo and I might go back to them because of the international roaming. Celebrity allows you to chat free of charge with other guests on ships that feature the Celebrity App. This feature is currently known to be available on the new Celebrity Edge, and also on Constellation, Equinox, Millennium, Reflection and Summit. With ATT, you can also use wifi and do wifi calling.

The state-of-the-art terminal at the Port of Miami is designed to quickly move people through check-in and onto the ship. The port is located less than 10 miles from Miami International Airport. Taxi services, rideshares, shuttles, and limousine services are available to take you to the cruise port.
If you don't want to be charged for listening to your messages, you can access your voicemail from a landline or other phone. You'll need your voicemail password (the one you selected during voicemail setup). If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it by contacting T-Mobile Customer Service. Verizon does not offer any specific cruise packages. However, customers on most Verizon plans can use their regular plan at sea, but with some restrictions.
Sprint offers cruise packages for specific cruise lines and ships. You can find a search tool on the Sprint website that allows you to determine whether your specific cruise is covered. As for cell service, that can still be somewhat hit or miss.
That's when I was told I could contact T-Mobile before my next cruise and they could turn off incoming calls and texts for the time I was on the ship to stop any charges. The cruise line offers VOOM internet access across its fleet, which is touted as one of the fastest wi-fi services of any major cruise line. With it, you can hook up your phone to wi-fi and make calls (via wi-fi), text, use apps, and browse the web.
For usage of voice and text on a cruise you will need to check on the T-Mobile website, as availability is limited and not available on every ship within a fleet. For this reason, we recommend putting your cell phone in airplane mode and using the ship’s Wi-Fi once you leave port. However, some people prefer the convenience and simplicity of using a cell phone carrier’s cruise plan.
The ship-based cell towers seem absurdly expensive for anything other than the most dire of emergencies. The problem I have with Spectrum isn't the per MB data charges but the fact that it rarely works in other countries without me calling every day I wake up in a foreign country. Voice and text work, but international data never works without calling them, resetting my networking settings, rebooting twelve times and wasting an hour fiddling with it. When the ship moves to another island I get to repeat that the next day.
Verizon also offers a TravelPass service that can be used on cruise ships. TravelPass costs $10 per day and includes unlimited talk, text, and data. If you want to avoid extra charges from your mobile phone service provider, put your smartphone on "airplane mode" sometime between boarding and when the ship sets sail. Even if you're not actively using your phone, your smartphone is constantly utilizing data in the background, racking up charges you're not even aware of.
Embrace the kitsch of Key West, a quirky coastal town in Florida with a fun, laidback attitude and excellent snorkeling opportunities. Paddle around its mangroves on a kayak, dive into its coral reefs rich with marine life, and finish off your day in the sun with a refreshing slice of the city’s famous key lime pie. I have thought about this just in case I do a longer cruise. I did the VOV in July/August and was out of US about 7 weeks.
